A hotel app without going through the App Store or Google Play
Guests do not want to download anything to find out where breakfast is. An installable web app solves 90% of the problem with no store involved.
When a hotel thinks about “a guest app”, it imagines months of development, two app stores and endless updates. For what guests actually need —map, information, front-desk chat— that is almost never necessary.
What an installable web app is
It is a website that can be added to the phone’s home screen. It looks like an app, opens without the browser bar and caches the basics to work with weak signal. Technically it is a PWA (progressive web app).
The guest opens a link, taps “Add to home screen” and gets an icon. If they do not, they can still use it in the browser. No 80 MB download, no new account.
Why it works well in hotels and lodges
- Guests leave in three days. Asking them to install a store app for a short stay is a lot.
- It is shared with a link. In the confirmation email, on a QR at the front desk or over WhatsApp.
- It updates itself. The hotel changes breakfast hours and the guest sees it, with no new version to publish.
- Works on Android and iPhone. One build, not two.
- No store dependency. No rejection over a policy or a review.
What you give up
- Reliable push notifications on iPhone. They work well on Android; on iOS they depend on the guest installing the app and the OS version.
- Store presence. It does not show up in App Store searches. For a hotel that rarely matters; for a consumer brand, it does.
- Deep phone features. Bluetooth, advanced camera or continuous background work belong to a native app.
When a store app does make sense
If the guest will use it many times a year, if the hotel is a chain with a loyalty program, if there are recurring payments or guaranteed background notifications. For a two-night stay, no.
Security and access
- Access expires. The booking code must stop working at check-out.
- Each guest sees their own. Their room, their chat. Not the guest list or other people’s history.
What the guest app should have
- Property map with the points that matter.
- Hours, services and hotel rules.
- Front-desk chat, without personal numbers.
- Simple requests: towels, ice, a restaurant booking.
- Spanish and English, if the hotel receives both.
- 360 views or photos, if the property is large.
If the app does not solve the questions the front desk repeats ten times a day, it is not worth it. That is the starting point, not the decoration.
