SEO checklist for small businesses in Costa Rica

Twelve things, in order of impact. If you can only do three, do the first three: without indexing, the rest does not exist.

SEO for a small business is not won with a trick. It is won with a site Google can read, content that answers what people search and signals that the business exists beyond its own page. This is the list we use, in the order it should be attacked.

1. The site must be indexable

If Google cannot get in, nothing else matters. Check that robots.txt does not block everything, that no forgotten noindex is around and that important pages return 200. Then register the domain in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

2. Submit the sitemap

Having the file is useless if nobody submits it. sitemap.xml in Search Console and Bing, then check the Pages report to see what was indexed and what was not.

3. One title and one description per page

The title is what people see on Google. It should say what it is and where: “Website for hotels in La Fortuna”, not “Home”. The description does not rank, but it decides whether people click.

4. One page per service, not one page with everything

A page about everything ranks for nothing. If the business sells three different services, each needs its own page, with its text, its questions and its call to action.

5. Content that answers real questions

The last 50 WhatsApp messages are a mine: prices, hours, “are you open on Sundays?”, “do you deliver?”. Every repeated question is a section or an article.

6. Structured data

Business, services, frequent questions and articles marked up with schema.org. It is not magic, but it helps Google understand the site and enables rich results.

7. Google Business Profile

For a local business, the profile is half the work. Address, hours, photos and reviews. Without a profile, competing for “near me” is nearly impossible.

8. Meaningful internal links

Every page should link to the others with descriptive text. “See CoAsiste Rumbo” says more than “click here”.

9. Speed and mobile

Most traffic in Costa Rica arrives on a phone. If the page takes more than three seconds, the visit is lost before it exists. Compressed images, no extra scripts, no fonts nobody asked for.

10. External links, with patience

A link from a chamber of commerce, a local directory or a media outlet is worth more than a hundred junk links. Do not buy links: earn them with something worth linking to.

11. Reviews and trust signals

Google reviews, real cases, team photos, visible address. A site that does not say who is behind it does not build trust, and without trust there is no click or sale.

12. Measure for real

Install analytics that tell you which pages bring visits and how many WhatsApp clicks happen. Search Console gives impressions, clicks and position; analytics gives what happens inside the site.

What not to do

  • Buying links in packages of 500 for a hundred dollars.
  • Repeating the same keyword in every paragraph.
  • Copying texts from another site.
  • Publishing ten filler pages to “have content”.
  • Ignoring Bing. It is smaller, but indexes fast and many small businesses never touch it.
Preguntas frecuentes

Frequent questions

How long until results show?
Indexing can take days. Ranking for competitive searches takes months and depends on content, links and competition. Anyone promising first place in a week is selling smoke.
Is Google Ads worth it?
It helps to appear now while SEO matures. But if the page does not explain or convert, ads only speed up the spending.
Is Bing worth it in Costa Rica?
Yes, especially because entry cost is low. It indexes fast and many small businesses never register. With IndexNow, announcing a new page is immediate.
Do I need a blog?
Not always. If the business sells something people search with questions (“how much”, “how to”), a blog helps. If it only needs to be found by name, service pages are enough.
